Team Building – Who’s in Your Pack of Poodles?

by James on November 3, 2008

Finding the Other PoodlesWorthy reader, you may ask yourself what in the world does team building and have to do with a pack of Poodles. A lot really.

Your pack of Poodles is the team you do business with. And the team you work with, has a huge impact on how successful your are and how successful your business is. They also impact how happy you are at work, which leads to better work and more business success.Your success is linked to your team. Building and maintaining yours is very important.

But why Poodles?

I worked with a craggy creative director in Chicago. We always seemed to end up talking to each other about the various things going on in the office and with our clients. Not unusual I suppose except we didn’t have any clients in common. Since asking a dumb question isn’t a big worry for me, I asked him if he could explained why we gravitated to each other. He told me, “Poodles always find each other.”

If you take a Poodle and to an off-leash dog park guess what happens.

Poodles are quite smart, smarter than other dogs, so they prefer to associate with other Poodles.

Hip Shots

  • Associate with the best people you can; age, position, role, and all the other artificial organization and social structures we insist on installing, will have little impact on who your Poodles are. But, they will have a big impact on your growth and success.
  • Nurture the relationships. Find ways to work with them, to bring them into your circle, keep in touch. This can be overt or covert. It doesn’t matter. Their involvement will make your work and your work and life experiences much better.
  • Keep track of them. Use tools like Linkedin or Facebook to stay in touch. And I mean really use the tools, don’t set yourself up and forget about it.
