Small Business Marketing Strategy – the Short Version

by James on January 14, 2010

Marketing strategy is a topic I write and read about frequently. One of my favorite blogs to read is IttyBiz. Her focus is micro businesses but her posts are almost always applicable to business in general.

Here’s a post, Whats Your Home Business, that is typical of this. While ostensibly about a micro business’s marketing strategy, it is equally applicable to your personal brand or a small business’s strategy, or even the marketing strategy of a much larger enterprises.

To refine your marketing strategy, Naomi suggests you answer five simple questions:

What’s your game? What do you do?

Why do you do it? Do you love it, or do you just have one of those creepy knacks?

Who are your customers? What kind of people would need or want what you offer?

What’s your marketing USP? Why should I buy from you instead of the other losers?

What’s next for you? What’s the big plan?

This is a simple approach but, in its simplicity, it can be highly effective and, if you use it to assess your personal brand, more than a little scary. Try it. Answer the questions as honestly as you can. Force yourself to succinctly respond to each question. Then see what your responses say about your business or personal brand’s marketing strategy.
